JustWorks

JustWorks camps develop skills

JustWorks camps are short-term projects that help volunteers examine and understand the causes and damaging effects of injustice. Participants work directly with people in the communities they serve, experiencing social justice struggles firsthand.

While learning about human rights issues and promoting intercultural understanding and reconciliation, volunteers are taught advocacy skills to address issues of poverty, discrimination, and racism. Participants may then make use of these skills in their congregations, campuses, and communities. The JustWorks experiential learning program is an important element in UUSC's mission to advance justice and protect human rights in the United States and around the world.

Since 1996 the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee has operated more than 25 JustWorks camps across the United States. Our program has provided hands-on learning for more than 2,000 people from around the country and overseas to work on issues of racial, social, and economic injustice.

Application Information

Participants must be age 16 or older. Participants are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the camp site. Rides provided by the JustWorks camp staff to and from airports or train stations may be arranged in advance, however.

The JustWorks camp sessions are generally a one-week commitment. The fee, which varies per workcamp, helps offset the cost of housing, food, and transportation during the program.

To apply for a JustWorks camp, you can download an application (PDF). You also may request an application or receive further information by contacting us by e-mail at justworks@uusc.org or by calling (800) 388-3920.

Anyone interested in these exciting learning experiences is encouraged to submit an application 6-8 weeks in advance of the JustWorks camp.
