Grand Bayou Community Visit
Like many survivors of
Katrina, the residents of Grand Bayou are struggling for justice.
Paramount to their success is the continuation of their livelihood,
shrimping.
Members of the Grand Bayou community have always been deeply
connected to the environment, as their lives and livelihoods depend
on it. They are deeply concerned about coastal erosion, a serious
issue along the U.S. Gulf Coast, and a particular issue for Grand
Bayou and other communities like it -- communities that are outside
the levy system and are therefore very vulnerable to environmental
degradation and the rapid loss of wetlands. Grand Bayou's paramount
concern, well before Katrina, was how to protect and rebuild the
wetlands in their community.
