What Took So Long?

Jennifer Harbury leads UUSC's Stop Torture Permanently Campaign, and has done as much as anyone to get the issue of U.S.-sponsored torture discussed in this country. This morning, I asked Jennifer if she saw the article on the treatment of Iraqi Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush that I wrote about here yesterday.

"Yes, I did, and it's great, but that story came out well over a year ago and no one in the mainstream press wanted anything to do with it. Now they've decided that they can begin to tell these stories."

Josh White of the The Washington Post deserves credit for an important story, but the question remains...What took so long?

For over a decade, Jennifer has been writing things about U.S. sponsorship of torture that the mainstream press would prefer to ignore. Her new book, "Truth, Torture, and the American Way" is due out very soon from Beacon Press. She hopes it will push the media to pursue even more stories that are well known to anyone who looks for them.
