But...It's An Emergency!
Don't let anyone tell you that the federal government has done nothing to address the Gulf Coast disaster. President Bush has signed an order temporarily suspending the Davis-Bacon Act as New Orleans struggles to rebuild. Davis-Bacon ordinarily requires that workers on projects financed through federal contracts receive at least the prevailing wage in the region. Now that requirement has been lifted because of the emergency situation.
The reconstruction contractors like Halliburton won't be taking any less in profits during the emergency, but workers will have to accept lower wages. The same people who have suffered most in this nightmare will sacrifice once more.
Is this your idea of how New Orleans should be reconstructed?
