Historic Save Darfur rallies planned for this weekend!
Submitted by Jeremy Nickel on Wed, 04/26/2006 - 12:04pm.
During his first year in the White House, President Bush wrote in the margins of a report on the Rwandan genocide, "Not on my watch." Tragically he has failed to live up to these words. Here at UUSC we are working with the Save Darfur Coalition to force our President to take action on the slow genocide that has already claimed over 400,000 lives in the Darfur region of Sudan. This Sunday, April 30, there will be major rallies around the country, and many smaller gatherings as well. We strongly encourage your participation in these events, as the burgoening national grass roots movement to save the people of darfur needs your support now.
If you are in Washington, D.C., join UUA President Bill Sinkford, in one of the largest protests against genocide that the world has ever seen!
Please also join the UU "rally before the rally" in Washington, D.C. to hear words from a Darfuri speaker, UUSC staff, and other featured speakers! Bring family and friends to enjoy live music at the Taft Memorial at noon. Young percussionists will lead a UU procession to the main rally on the National Mall at 1:15 p.m. On the West Coast, UUSC President Charlie Clements will speak at the Day of Conscience for Darfur in San Francisco, which will begin with a moment of silence at 11:15 a.m on the Golden Gate Bridge, and will then move to Crissy Field for the rally at 1:30 p.m.
The third major rally will take place in Chicago, and other Save Darfur rallies are being held in many cities around the country.
If you can’t make it to a rally, visit our website to send an urgent message to your U.S. senators and representative to support the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (HR3127) and a supplemental appropriation of at least $173 million for the African Union Mission in Darfur. And you can still sign a postcard or order a supply to distribute for the Million Voices for Darfur campaign.
For more information on the rallies, call Bev Hoffman: 202-296-4672, ext 12.
