Sudanese activists released...sort of
Last week's announcements that two Sudanese human rights lawyers, Mossaad Mohammed Ali and Adam Mohamed Sharief, had been detained incommunicado by the government was the impetus for UUSC action. It appears that our action alert has had some effect.
Our colleague organization, the Sudan Organization to Stop Torture (SOAT) based in London, notified us today that Ali has been released from "security custody" but is required to report daily to government offices in Nyala for continued interrogation. Sharief apparently has been under the same restrictions from the outset. This prevents their engagement in their work with the Amel Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in Nyala and the Amel Center’s network of lawyers.
We continue to monitor this situation. In addition to SOAT, the International Refugee Rights Initiative in New York City provided information used in our reports.
