Million Voices Strong for Peace in Darfur
Submitted by Shelley Moskowitz on Fri, 06/30/2006 - 3:01pm.
There is reason to be hopeful. Ambitious goals can be set and achieved. Last January, UUSC joined with the UUA and our allies at the Save Darfur coalition to help gather one million postcards to President Bush urging action to end the genocide in Darfur. Our activists heeded the call by setting up tables at their congregations, going door-to-door and talking with family and friends. Our staff incorporated the postcards into every event and advocated on behalf of Darfur at every Yad Vashem gathering.
On April 30, the coalition was more than halfway to the goal when thousands gathered in D.C. to rally for Darfur. On June 29, I witnessed Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) jointly sign the one millionth postcard at a press conference at the U.S. Capitol. We need to continue to set our sights high and stay active until there is peace in Darfur.
I want to thank everyone who participated in the Million Voices postcard campaign for making it a great success. Special thanks goes to UUSC advocacy team member Claire DeWitte who supplied our activists with thousands of postcards and tracked our progress towards our goals. Way to go everyone!
