Download MP3 (right-click to "Save as...")
Our October conference call featured tips for organizing Guest at Your Table, followed by discussion with program coordinators. More info
Now is the time to start planning Guest at Your Table! The call first highlighted our focus on going green with the program; reusing most materials is good, but don't reuse envelopes since our post office box number has changed! We went over some basics for beginning to organize Guest, including the importance of reading the planning booklet online and ordering early. You can read about this year's guests online, and find inspiration in activities organized by other congregations. When it's time to wrap up the program, we have three tally sheet options: an online form, an Excel spreadsheet, and the form you fill out by hand (found at the end of the planning booklet). Also remember to fill out our program evaluation form so we can continue to improve! Finally, challenge campaigns are a way to inspire your congregation through a pool of matching donations from a few congregants. Less info

May 2010: Defending Civil Liberties
Download MP3 (right-click to "Save as...")
Our May call discussed UUSC’s civil liberties work in the United States and around the world. More info
UUSC is in the midst of a strategic planning process which will shape our future civil liberties programming. The current recommendation is to focus on our work with Muslims in the United States and abroad as well as work on the issue of torture. Almost two years into the Obama administration, there still remains much to be done around civil liberties. Racial and religious profiling continues in the United States, and in the U.S. and abroad national security is used to justify civil liberties violations. The Building Bridges for Civil Liberties workshops continue to strengthen connections between UUs and Muslim and Arab Americans, building ties for mutual understanding and political advocacy work. UUSC is working with our partners in the Middle East to strengthen democratic processes, especially focusing on the rights of women. Several different UUSC-sponsored workshops in Afghanistan are teaching people about political participation and human rights, in a way that respects their cultures and relates to Afghan law and Islam. We are seeking to hold accountable those responsible for torture, and to support those who are speaking out against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Less info

February 2010: Advancing Economic Justice
Download MP3 (right-click to "Save as...")
Download Notes
Our February conference call presented an update on economic justice and this year's Justice Sunday program. More info
The global recession has created a particularly challenging situation for workers around the world. Informal workers, such as street vendors and some factory workers, have been disproportionately affected, since they lack full government recognition and often have no clear recourse when their rights are violated. Conditions are also difficult for formal workers, and now is a pivotal time to promote economic justice. Advancing economic justice is the theme of this year's UUSC Justice Sunday, which is an annual opportunity for UUs to join together on one human-rights issue, to learn, advocate, and create positive change. This year, UUSC has an exciting new event coinciding with Justice Sunday called Get Together — a nationwide conversation about economic with Steven Greenhouse, author of The Big Squeeze: Tough Times for the American Worker. Download MP3 (right-click to "Save as...")
Our December call highlighted UUSC's work in Uganda, helping people to return home after years of brutal conflict. More info
Nineteen years of brutal war have left both physical and emotional scars in northern Uganda. UUSC and partner Caritas Gulu led a community dialogue to find tangible ways to help people rebuild their lives. First, people asked for traditional cleansing ceremonies to lay to rest the people who were killed in the conflict. Next, there is a need for homes to be rebuilt. UUSC funded youth groups in exchange for their labor in building homes for those who are elderly or otherwise unable to build themselves. Another need is oxen to help people plow their fields. They are sharing oxen, which helps to bring together a community torn apart by war. UUSC is raising funds to buy oxen through our special holiday Oxen Project. Finally, UUSC is working with Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers to help people develop their own technology in order to earn income, with work such as making charcoal. These projects have given hope to a people scarred by years of war. Less info

Download MP3 (right-click to "Save as...")
Our May volunteer network conference call discussed how the economy has impacted UUSC, how UUSC is working to address these new challenges, and how you can help. More info
With the economy's downward turn, UUSC has had to step back and reevaluate our activities. We have made some adjustments by cutting our operating budget. At the same time, we are striving to keep our most important functions and our commitment to our partners. UUSC realizes how incredibly fortunate we are to have a network of dedicated and talented volunteers to advance our mission.
