To Encourage Meaningful Usage of Federal Funds in Gulf Coast
Date this position was adopted by UUSC:
Monday, February 22, 2010
UUSC signed a letter to senators of states in the Gulf Coast to support using the
upcoming jobs bill to redirect unused Katrina/Rita funds for projects promoted
in the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act (H.R. 2269). The
purpose of this action is to show broad-based support for redirecting
unused
Hurricane recovery money for programs that support Gulf Coast Civic
Works
projects and continued concern for the most vulnerable people in the
Gulf Coast still in need of assistance more
than four years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The letter is accompanied by a memo that outlines ways that the $2.8 billion in funds could support non-profits and local governments to create living wage jobs to restore wetlands, rebuild affordable housing, train workers and support efforts to make Gulf Coast communities and vulnerable populations more resilient in the future. A PDF of the letter is attached below.
