Date this position was adopted by UUSC:
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
The
following recommendations are addressed to the U.N. Security Council, members
of the Friends of UNAMID group, and UNAMID's police- and troop-contributing
countries in advance of the renewal of UNAMID's mandate, which expires on July 31, 2008.
Charles Clements, the undersigned, is a public health physician and human-rights activist. He is president of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), a non-governmental human-rights organization that responds to humanitarian crises.
UUSC, which represents more than 50,000 members and supporters, has been active in Darfur since 2004. It has a particular interest in the protection of, and humanitarian response for, highly vulnerable groups. In Darfur, UUSC works to weave a web of protection for women and girls by implementing programs on the ground and by strengthening UNAMID's capacity to implement its protection mandate. UUSC's recommendations are informed by its specialized knowledge in the protection of vulnerable populations in crisis and its ongoing presence in Darfur.
