Crises
UUSC signed on to a letter to President Obama from faith-based and
human-rights groups to request $3 billion in emergency supplemental aid to meet the long-term needs of Haiti. The request also expressed the need for aid to be allocated and disbursed in ways that would help avert
similar disasters in the future. The letter includes a section on the
protection needs of women and girls that is based on the January 29, 2010, letter
regarding gender-based violence in Haiti.
The purpose of this action was to show broad-based support for significant long-term U.S. funding for a Haitian-led recovery using the emergency supplemental request as the legislative vehicle.
