Workshops and events

Volunteering in Haiti: More than Just Hammers and Nails!
Thursday, June 23, 9:00–10:15 a.m.
Convention Center, Room 207 BC

Presented by Brock Leach, of UUSC; Eric Cherry, of the Unitarian Universalist Association; and Jessica York.

Learn by doing and volunteer your skills to rebuild Haiti! UUSC's new social-justice curriculum and experiential learning program will help you involve your congregation in creating a just recovery. Workshop participants will hear about the experience of volunteering in Haiti and sample activities from the curriculum. Discover a toolbox — not only hammers and nails, but also heart and soul — that will lead to a transformative faith experience.

Supercharging Your UU Social-Action Committee
Thursday, June 23, 2:45–4:00 p.m.

Convention Center, Rooms 218/219

Presented by Lauralyn Smith, of UUSC, and Gary Nissenbaum, of the Unitarian Church in Summit, N.J.

Are our social-action committees truly progressive? Is outreach often too broad or conversational to be effective? This workshop presents a practical, step-by-step process to formulate measurable and attainable social-action initiatives to transform our community's sense of accomplishment and set about healing our world.

UUSC Gala
Thursday, June 23, 9:30–11:00 p.m.
Westin Hotel, Grand Ballroom C

Join UUSC President Bill Schulz in a conversation with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and Daisy Khan about religious tolerance, the future of Islam, change in the Middle East, and ways Unitarian Universalists can build bridges with the Muslim community. UUSC will present Rauf and Khan with its highest award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Award. Imam Rauf is the inspiration behind the proposed interfaith center near Ground Zero in New York City that has generated so much controversy. Khan is a pioneer of progressive views of the role of women in Islam. Members of the UU Musicians Network will provide music, and refreshments will be available.

This event is free and open to all GA registrants; badges will be required for entry. To help us plan for the gala, RSVP today.

Eye-to-Eye Partnerships and Congregational Social-Justice Work
Friday, June 24, 10:45 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Convention Center, Room 202 AB

Using UUSC's partnership model, understand how building eye-to-eye relationships advances common goals. You'll leave with the tools to make this powerful approach result in successful advocacy.

Address by UUSC President Bill Schulz
Saturday, June 25, approximately 9:00–9:30 a.m. (during Plenary IV)
Convention Center, Hall C
