In Support of Creating a Voluntary Certification Program to Discourage Child and Forced Labor

Date this position was adopted by UUSC:
Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Sign on to two International Labor Rights Forum letters to Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) regarding a provision in the Farm Bill (proposed by Harkin) that would create a voluntary certification program for U.S. importers to use to show that their products are not made by child labor or forced labor.

There are two letters: one that addresses the general issue of what certification should include and another that is focused specifically on the cocoa industry and how the mainstream companies have re-defined what certification means in order to make it seem like they are meeting the terms of the Harkin-Engel Protocol.
