The tent, rising on a sunlit lawn, is both a grim reminder and a message of peace and hope. On the top are two words: SAVE DARFUR.
The tent — its panels a colorful collage of images and words — is on the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, one of more than 215 Tents of Hope that have sprung up in 44 states and nine countries.
The yearlong project aims to focus attention on the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, where more than 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million are living in refugee camps. The five-year-long crisis has been called the worst humanitarian crisis in recent history by United Nations authorities.
