UUSC Statement on China Earthquake

Date this position was adopted by UUSC:
Tuesday, May 13, 2008

UUSC joins the people of China in mourning the deaths of the tens of thousands of people killed by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked the southwestern province of Sichuan on Monday, May 12. We especially express our sorrow for the deaths of children, including the many who were trapped under the fallen rubble of school buildings.

A number of concerned constituents have asked if UUSC will be launching a relief fund to aid Chinese earthquake survivors. After careful consideration, UUSC has decided not to do so, choosing to maintain our focus on helping the survivors of the devastating cyclone that struck Myanmar on May 3.

This difficult decision was shaped by several factors. In China, the government has already mounted an immediate and robust relief effort and initiated a massive search and rescue operation with helicopters, medics parachuted in, and specialists working to free people from rubble. Relief supplies are getting in the affected areas. The Chinese government has welcomed international relief resources and many governments have already sent aid supplies. In contrast, the situation in Myanmar is still desperate with 2.5 million people affected, fears of rising death tolls, and less than a third of the affected people receiving assistance. Most importantly, in the days since the cyclone hit Myanmar, UUSC has now identified viable, concrete means of channeling assistance into the country through groups operating on the ground. Learn more about UUSC's efforts in Myanmar.

UUSC constituents who wish to donate to help earthquake survivors in China may direct their gifts to us, and we will make sure the funds are sent to effective colleague organizations. Give now.
