Your Voice Heard in Washington, Safeguarding Lives in Haiti

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

On Monday and Tuesday, more than 150 UUSC supporters took action to promote the Assessing Progress in Haiti Act. Tuesday evening, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on and passed it without opposition!

The Assessing Progress in Haiti Act would see to it that the reconstruction process addresses the needs of the most vulnerable Haitians. Because of grassroots pressure from you and other UUSC supporters, and from our Haitian partners, we are one step closer to enactment of this crucial legislation.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) spoke from the House floor in support of H.R. 1016. She said:

We owe it to the Haitian people — and the American people — to find out how much of this money was actually delivered to Haiti and where the money went. That is why I strongly support this bill, which requires the President to report on the status of post-earthquake relief, recovery, reconstruction, and development efforts in Haiti...

I am in awe of the strength and resiliency of the Haitian people. We owe it to them to assist them in their time of need. We also owe it to them to make certain our assistance reaches the people who need it most.

Now we must focus on winning passage of the bill in the U.S. Senate. Your involvement remains critical to our success. Together, we will lift up the voices of UUSC supporters and Haitian partners calling for a justice-centered reconstruction effort.
