On May 27, 2006, a powerful earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, struck central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, causing death and damage in many nearby towns and an extensive rural area. UUSC extends our deep sympathy to the survivors of the earthquake in Indonesia and our solidarity with those organizations working to respond. We are not, however, launching an emergency appeal for the earthquake.

There are many excellent organizations working to provide relief to this disaster and we would like to recommend some of them to our constituents who would like to respond.

1. HIVOS is a humanitarian humanist organization from the Netherlands with whom we work very closely in Aceh on our tsunami relief program. Their goals and philosophy in disaster work are very similar to our own, with a strong gender focus. They have set up an office in the area and are working through several Indonesian partners.

2. DREAM (Disaster Research and Management/UPN Disaster Research Center)
This group provides immediate medical response through a team of doctors in mobile clinics and on motorcycles who travel to the remote areas off the main roads where earthquake victims have little access to medical care.

3. Jemaat Allah Global Indonesia (JAGI), (Indonesian Church of God). This is the Indonesian Unitarian Universalist organization which participates in the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU). They responded immediately by collecting emergency relief supplies for their members and affected communities, and a psychosocial relief team. They plan to work with Habitat for Humanity in reconstruction. You can view their report online (PDF).
