UUSC celebrated its legacy, championed the rights of workers, and promoted the rights of survivors of humanitarian crises during the recently completed General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Outstanding social activists honored
UUSC’s 2006 awards for social justice activism were presented June 23 during our Annual Meeting and Celebration, held in St. Louis, Mo., as part of the General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Righteous Among the Nations
At a formal ceremony in Jerusalem, UUSC founders Waitstill and Martha Sharp were honored for their World War II heroism in risking their own lives to save Jews from the Holocaust.

JustWorks camps
Space is limited but still available for two experiential learning opportunities this summer. The third annual Freedom Summer: A Civil Rights Journey takes place July 8-15, and travels through several southern cities that were hotbeds of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s.

From Aug. 6-12, the UUSC-Lakota camp takes place on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota and will provide volunteers a firsthand look at justice issues facing Native Americans.

“Tear down that prison, Mr. President”
Human rights activists are celebrating a U.S. Supreme Court decision they hope will lead to the prompt closing of the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
