Gulf Coast Advocacy
When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast, they delivered a catastrophe of historic proportions. The natural disasters were only exacerbated by the human-made crisis of an inept government response that failed to evacuate and support the most vulnerable people — predominantly black and low-income residents. In the wake of the hurricanes, the UUA and UUSC joined together to help rebuild Gulf Coast communities. Through a powerful mix of grassroots partnership, legislative advocacy, and volunteering, we pushed for a just recovery for everyone on the Gulf Coast, working to protect the basic human rights of the people that bore — and continue to bear — the weight of this disaster.
Rebuilding the Gulf Coast:
A Unique Partnership between UUSC and the UUA
In Rebuilding
the Gulf Coast: A Unique Partnership between UUSC and the UUA, a DVD produced by UUSC,
you can learn how relief funds were distributed and see the tangible
results that resulted from the large outpouring of financial support and
dedicated volunteerism. You'll see positive outcomes for those hit hardest by
this disaster and hear from our partners on the ground. And with the
accompanying discussion guide, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on, talk
about, and dive deeper into the many human-rights issues and themes that the
film highlights.
