Staff position — Campaign Manager

Department: Outreach and Mobilization

Reports to: Director, Outreach & Mobilization

Summary: The Campaign Manager will lead the strategic design, creation, implementation and management of UUSC’s advocacy campaigns. He or she will build and engage the activism of UUSC members, supporters, and the wider public, in confronting injustice and challenging oppressive policies that violate human rights. Campaigns will focus on UUSC’s core program areas of Economic Justice, Environmental Justice, Civil Liberties and Rights in Humanitarian Crises.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, manage, and implement UUSC’s activist-based campaigning strategy.

  • Establish and chair cross-departmental working groups which analyze mobilization options, recommend priority campaigning issues to the UUSC Management Team. Coordinate overall campaign implementation.

  • Design and develop vibrant and innovative mobilization campaigns, establishing clear goals and objectives, budgets and workplans. This will be done while ensuring that campaigns and initiatives benefit from close collaboration with other UUSC staff and volunteer leaders.

  • Responsible and accountable for achieving campaign objectives, working autonomously to meet goals. Manage the budget for UUSC campaign work. Provide functional and programmatic supervision of UUSC staff, consultants, interns, and volunteers.

  • Act as a media spokesperson for UUSC campaigns and work creatively with UUSC’s media and PR staff to achieve the widest possible media exposure of those campaigns.

  • Build UUSC’s Human Rights Defenders List and other lists of UUSC constituents and allies interested in participating in the organization’s advocacy work.

  • Establish and maintain relations of partnership, coordination and mutual support with other organizations, networks and individuals engaged on the same advocacy issues as UUSC.

  • In collaboration with staff from the Institutional Advancement Department, lead the preparation of funding proposals to support and expand campaigning activities.

  • Perform other related activities as directed by the Director of Outreach & Mobilization.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Seven to ten years demonstrated organizing experience—with three of those years in a campaign leadership role. The candidate will ideally have experience in the conception and implementation of multi-faceted campaigns targeting legislative, media, corporate and other institutional decision-makers.

  • Demonstrated commitment to social activism as the basis of progressive change. Strong commitment to UUSC’s human rights mission.

  • A leader’s sensibility: The ability to articulate a campaign vision and help others see the path to taking personal risk to achieve that vision.

  • Demonstrated ability to network extensively, and evidence of a strong external network in at least one UUSC program focus area.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact comfortably and effectively with a wide range of personalities.

  • Demonstrated experience of working collaboratively to achieve program/organizational goals. A strong appreciation of the value of cross functional relationships.

  • Solid problem solving and decision making skills

  • Strong research skills and the ability to analyze and understand campaigning opportunities.

  • High comfort level with electronic communications tools and computer technology, in general. Database and electronic advocacy experience strongly preferred.

  • The gift to convince via excellent written and verbal communications skills.  collaborative teamwork across departments and external contexts.

  • Good sense of self-organization and the ability to manage efficiently large volumes of information. .

  • Well-developed program and budgetary management skills.

  • Proven ability to coordinate the efforts of a team of staff and volunteers committed to a shared purpose.

  • Multicultural sensitivity and the ability to thrive in a diverse work environment.

  • Ability to travel, as necessary, with up to 30% of work time spent outside of the office.

  • A resilient sense of humor and the ability to keep hope alive.

  • Work in human rights advocacy in a faith context strongly preferred.

Education:

Advanced degree required
