Justice Sunday 2013: Justice Is Choosing Compassionate Consumption

On Justice Sunday, [March 24], 2013, we will stand with UU congregations nationwide to celebrate the culmination of our efforts to raise awareness and action for the rights of workers in the food system. Working with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, we teamed up with UUs across the country who are committed to ethical eating and to promoting the human rights of workers in the food system. This special worship service celebrates what we have done together so far and reminds us that Justice Sunday calls us to reflect, understand, and act — today and every day.

Fundraising announcement

If you are dedicating a plate collection, planning a UUSC membership drive, or advocating for a congregational budgeted gift to UUSC during your Justice Sunday program, remember to highlight these key points:

  • UUSC is a membership organization that is independent of and receives no funding from government or the UUA. It depends on the active participation and financial support of its members and supporters to carry out its vital work.

  • UUSC’s status as a membership organization provides it the autonomy to advocate for justice-oriented public policies across the political spectrum. By neither seeking nor accepting government funds, UUSC maintains a high level of independence

  • Contributions from members and supporters makes up approximately 60 percent of UUSC's annual budget.

  • UUSC applies 87 percent of its revenue directly to programmatic work.

  • A congregational budgeted gift of at least $1 per certified member qualifies the congregation for the James Luther Adams award!

Affirm your commitment to human rights: begin or renew your membership during Justice Sunday!

Each UUSC membership elevates our collective voice to advocate for positive social change. When UUSC meets with elected officials, they make it known that they represent nearly 40,000 members and supporters around the country who are committed to social justice. Imagine if that number were 150,000 — it starts with you.

Honor the message of Justice Sunday by updating your membership! Become eligible for a matching grant from the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock with a gift of $100 or more and double your impact!

By making a monthly contribution, you can join a special group of UUSC supporters: Keepers of the Flame. As a Keeper of the Flame, you provide UUSC with an ongoing reliable source of support throughout the year, enabling swift response when human rights are suddenly in crisis. These sustaining gifts align with the ongoing spirit of Justice Sunday: reflect understand, and act — today and every day.
