Further aid is need so world leaders don't
forget women and children of Afghanistan
Afghan Women's Welfare Department (AWWD) works to
improve Afghan women's social status, education and health conditions. AWWD
works in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan to respond to Afghan
refugee women's human rights needs such as protection, education and
health. AWWD also provides vocational training and income generating
programs for Afghan women residing in rural areas around the city of
Peshawar.
In the past, UUSC supported AWWD's project for public
health and human rights education in Zenday refugee camp. Further UUSC
funding will support a reproductive health awareness project for women and
adolescent girls also in the Zenday camp which will include topics such as
safe motherhood, family planning, HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, and
gender based-violence.
The Afghan Women's Educational Center (AWEC) mobilizes
refugee women in an effort to enhance their skills and improve their
education in order that they actively participate in the reconstruction of
Afghanistan.
UUSC supported AWEC's program to enhance the role of
women in community-based organizations by providing them with leadership
training, skills development, and computer training. Further funding has
been allocated for emergency relief and a water supply project in the remote
province of Khak-e-Jabar, and in particular Chinar town, located on the
outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan.
The Children's Fund forges partnerships, nurtures
visionaries and recognizes the potential to change the world through
investments in children.
UUSC supported their project to provide relief
supplies such as food, clothing and medicine to refugees in overcrowded
camps on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. New funding from UUSC has enabled
the Children's Fund to open a vocational institute and education center at
Shamshatoo refugee camp in Pakistan for Afghan widows and orphaned adult
girls.
