Barakat
Barakat is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the well-being of marginalized groups in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan by increasing access to education and a healthy environment.
Barakat began as a weaving project in the late 1980s, but developed into a traditional rug production program that provides a viable means of employment for Afghan refugees. Proceeds from the sale of these carpets are used to support educational opportunities for marginalized groups in these communities, particularly girls and women.
In Afghanistan, Barakat's programs help to fill the void and expand opportunities to girls and women. Their educational efforts include schools and literacy and women's empowerment programs, contributing towards the creation of a society in which men and women regard themselves as equal and treat each other accordingly.
UUSC supports Barakat's efforts to raise awareness about human rights and women's rights, which are guaranteed by the Constitution of Afghanistan. With UUSC funding, Barakat teachers are trained in human rights and learn how to introduce these topics in the classroom.
