Muslim Advocates
UUSC supports the work of this program partner to use the U.S. legal and political process to promote equality, liberty, and justice for all. Muslim Advocates provides leadership through legal advocacy, policy engagement, and civic education. UUSC supports Muslim Advocates’ work to be a legal resource that promotes the full and meaningful participation of Muslims in U.S. public life.
In 2007, UUSC partnered with Muslim Advocates to support its work protecting the rights of Muslim Americans against overreaching federal law enforcement policies that unfairly target them. In the first year of our partnership, Muslim Advocates, with UUSC's support, produced Got Rights?, an educational "know your rights" video, available online and on DVD in five languages (English, Arabic, Farsi, Somali and Urdu). Farhana Khera, president & executive director of Muslim Advocates, also testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, presenting experiences of Muslim Americans facing invasive questioning and searches and seizures of their property, in particular electronic devices, such as laptops, cell phones and digital cameras, at the border when returning from travelling.
