Working families in the United States are losing economic ground every day. Between 2000 and 2004, real median family income fell by 3 percent, or about $1,600 in 2004 dollars. The lost ground corrodes human dignity when a full-time paycheck at the federal minimum wage means a worker with a family of three makes $5,000 below the poverty level. Work should be a doorway out of poverty.
