Choosing Compassionate Consumption and the Restaurant Industry
Do you care about eating ethically? Do you eat out? Do you care about workers' rights? Do you care about the working conditions of the people who prepare and serve your food?
Ten million people in the United States are employed in the restaurant industry, the largest growing sector of the economy. The vast majority of these jobs are incredibly low-wage positions — 7 of the 10 lowest-paid occupations — with little or no access to paid sick days and health benefits.
But UUSC, our partners, and our members are doing something about it! UUSC has joined with the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC-United) to raise awareness about the issues that affect restaurant workers. Part of this effort includes promoting Behind the Kitchen Door, a book by Saru Jayaraman, ROC-United cofounder and codirector. Raising awareness about the issues in the restaurant industry is the first step to changing these human rights violations.
Replay the webinar to learn more about how you can choose compassionate consumption when you dine out. When you are done, please let us know you watched it by pledging to support restaurant workers' rights.
