UUSC Responds to Biden Administration Climate Migration Report

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — In response to the Biden administration’s release of their report, “Report on the Impact of Climate Change on Migration,” UUSC CEO and President Rev. Mary Katherine Morn released the following statement:
“We welcome today’s release of this long-anticipated report. The global climate crisis is already forcing millions of people around the world to flee their homes because of natural disasters or lost livelihoods, and it is long past time for governments to do more to provide humanitarian protection to people suffering from a crisis they didn’t cause. As the report acknowledges, this displacement is not just happening abroad, but in the United States as well. We strongly endorse a process to better understand and address climate-forced displacement happening inside the United States. UUSC and our partners have already issued policy guidance to inform such a response to internal displacement.
“While we commend the report’s call for greater humanitarian protections for those fleeing the climate crisis, we’re struck by the irony of the Biden administration making that demand of foreign governments at the same time that it continues to enforce harshly anti-asylum policies at the border. The administration’s actions must match its words, and that begins with abandoning cruel Trump-era relics like the Title 42 policy and other roadblocks that currently prevent people from finding refuge in the United States.”
