The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee advances human rights through grassroots collaborations.
LOCATION: Chiang Mai, Thailand
Formed in 2001, the School for Shan State Nationalities Youth (SSSNY) was formed to develop the capacity of its members to contribute to government public discourse. The hope is for young people to ride the wave of growing popularity for a transition to a federal democratic system in Shan State and Burma. A democratic government is vital to securing human rights, equality, and peace in the region.
UUSC’s support will provide human rights defenders and activists with emergency support. The military junta in Burma is working to take people’s land and resources while constantly threatening communities with violence. Financial backing will allow them to improve their communications and their capacity to engage in social and political movements.
