Unitarian Universalist Service Committee CEO and President Rev. Mary Katherine Morn released the following statement in response to a Tucson, AZ jury’s decision to find Scott Warren not guilty of two felony counts of harboring undocumented immigrants:

“The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee celebrates Scott Warren’s acquittal after the Trump administration’s second attempt to punish him for providing water to migrants traversing some of the deadliest terrain in the United States. The verdict is a sharp and welcome rebuke to the administration’s ongoing effort to criminalize compassion—and marks a major victory for all of the humanitarian workers willing to risk their own lives to save those of others. Despite this win, however, the broader fight against the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policies is far from over. UUSC, working with organizations like No More Deaths, will continue to seek justice for the thousands of migrants, including children, being held in inhumane conditions across the country.”
