UUSC Partner Celebrates International Women’s Day
By UUSC Staff on March 8, 2023
On a sunny Saturday leading up to International Women’s Day, hundreds of people in The Bahamas gathered to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality and human rights.
A colorful group of advocates, activists, and community members marched to raise awareness of the many forms of gender disparities in The Bahamas and around the world, as well as to paint a picture of a more vibrant future of equality.
UUSC partner organization Equality Bahamas led the way to The Dundas Centre for Performing Arts to visit the International Woman’s Day Expo.
Positive energy radiated throughout the crowd, but the seriousness of the advocacy stayed front and center. With every step, the group collectively advanced issues like literal and legal protection from marital rape, body autonomy, and the decriminalization of the LGBTQ+ community.
The expo was loaded with educational content, opportunities to get more deeply involved in the movement, and local vendors.
And of course, there was no way to stop the people from dancing. Joy is resistance!
Equality in The Bahamas isn’t some far off, unachievable, unreachable dream. There may be a ways to go, but individuals and organizations like Equality Bahamas are resolute and determined to create a better world for the next generation of marchers.
