Ecological Solutions Foundation
LOCATION: Gizo Western, Solomon Islands
The Ecological Solutions Foundation Trust (ESF) is the only grassroots organization in the Solomon Islands working to raise awareness about and respond to the needs of villages confronting the direct impacts of climate destruction.
In partnership with UUSC, the ESF team advocates people with disabilities and other impacted communities in the Solomon Islands, and supports their efforts to relocate safely and in a self-determined way in response to the impacts of climate change. Specifically, ESF is working with the people of the low-lying Tikopia atoll who are on the front lines of climate impacts as they seek to relocate and adapt to these human-induced climate effects.
ESF has helped reinforce homes at risk of destruction due to climate change, supported the public health of families and communities through installing rain water tanks to provide clean water, and educated victims of climate displacements in Nuatabu village, Nusa Hope, and Wagina.
Moreover, the organization has helped advocate increased services and resources for people with disabilities who are impacted by climate change.
ESF is raising awareness of the impacts of climate change on the Lord Howe atoll. A video documentary is in development to request that policymakers take action on behalf of the people living on the atoll.
The Ecological Solutions Foundation also conducts social and scientific studies of climate change and its impacts on communities and ecosystems. The organization supports communities through campaigns and lobbying for policies that safeguard their interests and culture.
UUSC is partnering with Ecological Solutions Foundation to assist communities in remote coastal areas of the Solomon Islands to build protections in place, rebuild homes, and advocate resources that will support at-risk communities in their relocation efforts.
With UUSC’s support, the Ecological Solutions Foundation was able to purchase four water tanks for the village of Wagina, providing reliable and clean alternative water supplies for basic consumption and sanitation. The Ecological Solutions Foundation has also been able to provide building materials to assist Nuatabu Village communities who were forcibly displaced by a tidal wave to rebuild their homes while also advocating for resources and technical assistance from local government agencies.
