Building a brighter future

Centering the experiences of people most affected by injustice, UUSC creates eye-to-eye relationships with frontline grassroots movements across the world. Our support helps to unlock doors of opportunity so that communities can determine their own future. Together, we are building a better world.

We work alongside grassroots groups to foster and implement community-led solutions — whether it’s adapting to our changing climate or ensuring safety and support for families in migration due to war, violence, or other oppressive conditions.

Our story

For over three-quarters of a century, UUSC has cultivated partnerships with oppressed communities, whose rights are threatened all over the world. With roots in helping Jewish people flee Nazi Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, UUSC has a dynamic history of showing up for communities facing injustice and oppression.

From Central America to Ukraine, UUSC’s history shows unwavering commitment to support people in building power and expanding their rights.

We acknowledge the emotional, mental, and spiritual toll of the oppression experienced by our partners — and we work as steadfast allies to address harms and create spaces where justice and equity can flourish.

Our people

The people driving sustainable change

UUSC’s staff and board are composed of a number of experts, from activists, advocates, UU faith leaders, and researchers, to policy experts, fundraising and finance professionals, attorneys, and members of the philanthropic community.

Words from our Team

Transformation happens through small acts of courage, sustained over time, by people who refuse to accept that the way things are is the way they must be.

UUSC FAQs

So, what is UUSC and what’s the organization all about?

What does UUSC do?

UUSC is an international human rights organization helping people of all faiths to show up in solidarity with communities who face severe attacks on their fundamental human rights. We provide our members with a variety of ways to support the grassroot partnerships that are at the heart of our work and drive the change we want to see in the world.

How does UUSC choose its partners?

UUSC prioritizes support for grassroots, community-led organizations that are directly impacted by systemic oppression. We seek partnerships based on shared values, long-term movement-building potential, and the ability to create sustainable change.

What is the difference between UUSC and the Unitarian Universalist Association?

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) supports and guides UU congregations, focusing on faith development and community programs. Meanwhile, UUSC is an independent human rights organization that partners with frontline communities worldwide to advance justice through advocacy and grantmaking. While both share important values for advancing social justice, the UUA grounds Unitarian Universalists in faith, while UUSC equips people to take action on global human rights issues.
