How we respond

UUSC advocates for policies that treat people with dignity and compassion by offering spaces of welcome and strengthening access to asylum. We work in solidarity—not charity— with grassroots migration justice partners who collectively form a comprehensive network of support. Together, our partners help people find safety and navigate a complex system that often makes it hard to get the care and respect they deserve.

Our approach in action:

  • Opening Doors of Opportunity and Belonging for Asylum-Seekers – Through our Community Accompaniment Program With Asylum-Seekers (CAPAS), we work with congregations and community groups to offer long-term, community-based support to asylum-seekers. We lead with dignity as we provide resources where possible, including housing, legal aid, family reunification and meeting other critical needs.
  • Challenging Harmful Immigration Policies – We work alongside migrant-led organizations to push back on policies, from mass deportations and offshore detention. Our work seeks to end the rollback of life-saving protections like Temporary Protected Status (TPS) through resistance efforts and by bolstering legal protections.
  • Confronting Border Violence and Defending the Right to Migrate – UUSC partners with Haitian-led organizations like GARR to protect people’s right to migrate. Amid escalating border militarization, we are documenting violations and advocating for compassionate cross-border solutions that bring an end to restrictions on people’s movement that are built upon xenophobia, discrimination, and racism.
  • Honduras: Confronting Danger, Demanding Justice – In one of the world’s most perilous places for environmental defenders, we advocate for accountability alongside Fundación San Alonso Rodríguez (FSAR) as we honor the legacy of Juan López, who was murdered for protecting land and water. We also partner with Foro de Mujeres por la Vida, one of the region’s grassroots organizations tracking and combating femicide and violence against women.
  • Guatemala & Nicaragua: Tackling the Drivers of Displacement – Everyone deserves the right to thrive in their home communities. With Asociación Pop No’j in Guatemala, we support Indigenous youth returning after deportation to reintegrate, gain livelihoods, and rebuild futures. Through our partnership with Fundación Entre Mujeres (FEM) in Nicaragua, a women-led movement, we promote food sovereignty and economic stability for women farmers and their families.
  • Mexico: Shelter, Safety, and Human Rights in Motion – For people forced to flee, the route is dangerous. In Mexico, our partners provide lifesaving aid, legal accompaniment, and protection. Casa Tochán in Mexico City provides dignified and comprehensive care, encompassing housing, medical, and psychological support. FM4 Paso Libre in Guadalajara delivers a similarly holistic model that combines shelter, legal support, and community advocacy.

Meet the partners leading migration solidarity

UUSC’s migration justice work, led by grassroots partners, defends the rights of people in migration, asylum-seekers, displaced people, and those who defend their communities from forces that would displace them. These are the organizations building sanctuary, advancing justice, and challenging systems of harm at every step of the journey.
