About

Fundación San Alonso (FSAR) bases its work on the broad moral, ethical, and political content of San Alonso Rodríguez. The organization’s mission is to promote the human rights of youth, women, peasants, and professional unions in Honduras. FSAR prioritizes communication, awareness raising, education, and organizing work for the benefit of the collective good.

UUSC began its partnership with FSAR in 2020, supporting FSAR in promoting a culture based on solidarity, mutual aid, respect for ancestral knowledge, and collective action. With a vision of community-led resistance to extractivism and corporate abuse, FSAR builds local capacity and supports organizing efforts against exploitative mining projects, particularly in the Bajo Aguán region. Together, FSAR and UUSC are committed to holding extractive industries accountable and advancing the rights of communities to protect their land, water, and livelihoods in the face of systemic violence and corruption.

FSAR has been successful in helping community members access housing, education, and agriculture over the past years. In 2024, FSAR constructed 11 homes in two rural villages and has also developed and continues to maintain “la Milpa,” a stretch of rehabilitated land growing sustainable crops. Every Thursday, volunteers and community members gather for a communal lunch prepared with much of the produce grown on the land. FSAR has also been instrumental in advocating for the protection of the Guapinol River, which has faced intense pollution over the past decade.

Juan Lopez, a beloved leader of FSAR and a fierce defender of land and water rights, played a crucial role in resisting harmful mining operations that affected the Guapinol River. In 2023, Juan was tragically assassinated for his work. His tireless advocacy and commitment to justice left a lasting legacy, inspiring us to carry forward his vision of collective liberation.
