Nonprofit Threat Thwarted

Resistance Network Successfully Impacted Tax Bill

By UUSC Staff on May 20, 2025

Last week, UUSC’s Resistance Network called upon members to speak out against a tax bill that would allow the White House to revoke the tax-exempt status of U.S. nonprofits. While the tax bill continues to target Medicaid, threatening the health of 78 million people, Republicans have removed the nonprofit provision.

Thank you for making your voice heard! As we continue to defend human rights and democracy, we must celebrate small wins as we mobilize to address new dangers. Resistance Network members and engaged civilians across the country used their collective power to successfully defend nonprofits. These organizations consistently fill gaps left by governmental systems at home and abroad. Thwarting the threat to nonprofit safety is a huge achievement.

While this specific language has been removed from the budget bill, it’s important to stay informed about potential future legislative efforts that could impact nonprofit organizations. Additionally, the tax bill at hand continues to threaten the health and safety of our neighbors. It devotes more funding to ICE and eliminates resources for clean energy and climate protections. The work is never done, but group mobilization can strengthen the justice movement and renew our energy.

No one can defend democracy by themselves. Join the Resistance Network to receive urgent action alerts, advocacy opportunities, frontline stories of resistance, and tools to help you organize locally. We will continue to respond to legislative threats as they emerge. It’s essential that we unite in solidarity and take bold action as we continue to defend human rights.
