The Kioa Island Community Organization (KICO) was established to support the people of Kioa Island in addressing critical issues such as internal displacement caused by the climate crisis, food and water insecurity, and promoting women’s equity in the economy.

About
KICO is dedicated to addressing the complex issues faced today by the members of the Kioa community in Fiji and the Pacific region as a whole. Founded in 2015, the organization is driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of support. Their vision is to create a secure and sustainable future on their ancestral land, where current and future generations can thrive.
Through its activities, KICO supports Kioans in building resilience and capacity to protect their homes and lives. Its structure as an organization completely led by Kioans ensures that the practices implemented and the lessons taught are sustainable, appropriate, and tailored to the unique needs of the community. As a result, Kioa has now developed a formal strategic plan to guide the direction of its future.
UUSC has been a proud partner since 2021 and is the first international organization to support the Kioa community since their resettlement in 1946. Together, our unity is foundational in helping the community remain on and be sustained by their ancestral land, while also being prepared to assist future migrants from Tuvalu. UUSC currently supports KICO through a long-term general operating grant and a non-economic loss and damage (NELD) grant provided through the Scottish government and our partner, the Climate Justice Resilience Fund. Through the NELD grant, multiple Pacific Island organizations work collaboratively to find and implement sustainable solutions to the effects of the climate crisis.
