About

Tulele Peisa was created in response to the Bougainville government’s inaction in addressing climate change migration. Bougainville, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea, is the primary relocation site for the Carteret Islanders, who are facing climate-forced displacement. The organization leads efforts to relocate displaced Carteret Islanders to Bougainville while also providing humanitarian support to families who wish to remain on the Carterets.

Through training programs and youth engagement, Tulele Peisa equips island communities with the tools to rebuild sustainable lives on safer ground. The organization initiated a project to relocate 150 families to safe and secure locations on mainland Bougainville and continues to advocate for climate migration with dignity and proper financing. Tulele Peisa also supports community development through its relocation program, regular trainings—including a training of 60 climate change practitioners—and a water and sanitation (WASH) project.

UUSC has partnered with Tulele Peisa since 2017, providing multi-year general operating support and program-specific funding. Currently, Tulele Peisa is part of Pacific Rising, a collaboration between UUSC, the Climate Justice Resilience Fund, the Scottish Government, and Pacific Island Indigenous organizations addressing loss and damage in their communities. Through this partnership, Tulele Peisa works collaboratively with regional organizations to find and implement sustainable solutions to the effects of climate change.
