The right to resist injustice faces unprecedented and escalating threats. Across the country, a coordinated attack on human rights is unfolding through executive actions, legislation, and policy changes targeting the most impacted communities and the organizations that defend them.

Historically, Unitarian Universalists have participated in social movements that challenged social norms and were heavily criminalized by the state, including the Abolitionist, Women’s Suffrage, Civil Rights, and Sanctuary movements. Today, we continue to live by our core principles as a faith community, including the right to a democratic process and honouring the dignity of everyone.

The criminalization of peaceful protests continues to spread as efforts are made to dismantle human rights protection while silencing those who speak out. Yet, our partners and the communities they serve are not deterred or defeated by these threats. From immigrant communities educating their members about legal rights, to LGBTQIA+ organizations creating safe and affirming spaces for people escaping persecution, to partners in Burma, Haiti, Honduras, and beyond, modeling strength as they come together to fill the gaps left by government oppression and disinvestment.

Our values call us to choose resistance. No one can defend democracy by themselves; that’s why we unite in solidarity and take bold action.

UUSC Continues to Resist

We are proud to collaborate with grassroots partners across the country and the globe to fight back against unjust laws and policies. Our approach builds the collective power needed to resist authoritarianism by responding rapidly to threats against civil liberties, democracy, and justice.

Through our Resistance Network, we mobilize members to speak out against emerging legislative threats. Our network has successfully helped thwart attempts to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofits, raised awareness for immigration allies, and responded to dire humanitarian aid needs.
